As part of its student success strategy, the College looks to assist students transition from developmental course work to college-level courses. “Concepts of Numbers,” developed by Assistant Professor Barbara Lontz, is an innovative approach to teaching developmental mathematics in order to reverse the declining success rate in MAT 010.
The redesigned course uses a conceptual approach versus the traditional path of teaching arithmetic through topics. Early results of student success in the redesigned course are promising. While the overall numbers were small during the pilot phase, success rates were significantly higher in classes using the “Concepts of Numbers” approach verses the traditional approach.
