The October 2011 edition of Research & Practice examines additional results from the 2011 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), which is conducted every other year during the spring semester. This is a continuation of the September 2011 research brief.
Questions from the survey are grouped to form five benchmark metrics that are used to assess how an institution is doing in engaging students in a variety of areas. Benchmarks addressed in this brief are Active and Collaborative Learning; Student Effort; and Academic Challenge.
In the 2011 CCSSE, the College saw downward trending scores in all three benchmarks, although scores for academic rigor remain relatively high when compared to other community colleges. The results will inform the College’s student success work in terms of integrating more student-to-student interaction and encouraging students to spend more time in preparation for their courses.
