The November 2011 edition of Research & Practice continues to examine changes made in fall 2010 to English placement cut scores. At that time, Accuplacer cut scores for placing in ENG 101 were lowered from 101 to 86. Students were also given the opportunity to retest via WritePlacer, an electronic essay exam.
Two semesters of data reveal that students placing into ENG 101 based on the placement testing revisions were not as successful in spring 2011 as the students in fall 2010. Also students who placed into ENG 101 in spring 2011 by scoring a 5 on the WritePlacer test were 1% less successful, and students who scored a 4 on the WriterPlacer were 8% less successful.
