December Research Brief Examines SCS 101 Skill Sets

The December 2011 edition of Research & Practice  examines student performance on the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) as part of the Student Success Course (SCS 101) assessment plan.

The 80-question inventory was given as a pre-test and post-test to all students enrolled in SCS 101 during the spring 2011 semester. The scores were subsequently analyzed to determine whether or not students experienced growth in the 10 skill sets measured by LASSI. Early data suggests that students who remain in SCS 101 through the entire semester show some improvement in each of the 10 skill sets.

As a cohort, students realized the largest average increase in scores in Selecting the Main Idea, followed by Test Strategies and Concentration. The smallest average gain occurred with Attitude and Motivation.
