If successful people are the ones who take obstacles and turn them into opportunities, Roberta Lee, Collegeville, is likely to experience success.

Lee is planning a career change at an age at which others are planning on retirement. She is a grandmother who did not allow being laid off from a long-held job as an administrative assistant interfere with her future. She is an adult student who is passionate about earning her Virtual Assistance certificate and ultimately her Office Administration degree from Montgomery County Community College. And she is a 2012 inductee in the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

After her children were grown, Lee realized that it was about time she took some time for herself to pursue her degree. Lee is described as “passionate” about earning her A.A.S. degree in Office Administration.

She is also a Virtual Office Assistance student who plans to start her own business as a work-from-home administrative assistant.

Lee is enrolled in the College’s new Virtual Assistance Certificate of Completion and Office Administration A.A.S. degree with a concentration in Virtual Assistance programs, intended to help experienced assistants gain the skills – especially the technology skills – they need to work remotely, including web conferencing, application sharing and data security.

The one obstacle Lee didn’t have to overcome was a financial hurdle.

“I had Pell grants and student loans to attend college,” Lee said. “Because tuition was affordable, I was able to attend Montgomery County Community College. I couldn’t afford the afford tuition of a university.”

Having completed her course work in December 2012, Lee will graduate with her class in May. Then she has a choice of what to do next: “I plan to either go to work or continue on with my education and get a bachelor’s degree,” she said.
